About
I am an historian of late twentieth century British political and cultural history. My work explores the impact of the end of empire on British society and attitudes to British identity. To date my work has focussed on left-wing extra-parliamentary organisations including the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Anti-Apartheid Movement, the National Union of Students and a number of groups within the Northern Irish civil rights movement. I am particularly interested in how predominantly white, middle-class members of the political left-wing have interacted with, and responded to, people of colour and how this has impacted on their sense of their own racial and national identity in a comparative context.
I completed my PhD in 2009 at York University in Toronto, Canada. My thesis, titled 'Racialism, Race and National Identity in Britain, 1958-1972' was supervised by Stephen Brooke. I completed my MA at McGill University, under the supervision of Elizabeth Elbourne, and my BA at the University of Toronto.
